CT (Computed Tomography) uses X-rays and computer processing to create cross-sectional images of the body in seconds. It is the test of choice for head injury, chest disease, kidney stones and many emergencies. We follow low-dose protocols, especially for children.

Preparation
- Plain CT usually needs no preparation.
- Contrast CT: 4–6 hours fasting and a recent serum creatinine report may be required.
- Inform us about pregnancy, diabetes medication (metformin), asthma or previous contrast allergy.
- Some abdominal scans need oral contrast to be drunk before the scan.
What to expect
The scan itself takes only a few seconds to minutes. You lie on a table that moves through a wide ring; it is open, quiet and not claustrophobic.
Frequently asked questions about CT Scan
What is the difference between CT and MRI?
CT is very fast and excellent for bones, lungs, bleeding and stones. MRI gives more detail of soft tissues such as brain, spinal cord and ligaments and uses no radiation. Your doctor chooses based on the question to be answered.
Is the radiation from a CT scan dangerous?
A CT scan uses a small, controlled dose of radiation. We use dose-reduction protocols and only scan when clinically justified.
Do I need to fast for a CT scan?
Only for contrast studies, typically 4–6 hours. Plain CT scans need no fasting.
